UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES. Italy. Mid-7th century. AV Solidus (4.28 g, 6h). Uncertain mint. Struck in the name of Constans II. [...]CONSt[AN S] PP A[...], crowned and draped facing beardless bust, holding globus cruciger / ITORI A AVG, cross potent on three steps,
P in right field; CONOB. Cf. MIB III X1, otherwise unpublished. Good VF, struck a little softly.
From the Marc Poncin Collection.
This coin belongs to the same group of coins that Hahn identified as an Italian mint imitating the style of Rome (MIB III X1-3). The style and date of these suggests an issue of the Lombards, who typically placed an identifying letter or mark in the fields of the reverse.
