From the Collection of a California Gentleman. Ex G. Hirsch 204 (5 May 1999), lot 1197.

Friedrich Ulrich, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and Prince of Wolfenbüttel, besieged Brunswick beginning on 22 July 1615 in an attempt to return the rebellious town to his control. With the help of its allies, however, the city was able to break the siege, forcing Friedrich Ulrich to retreat to his base at Wolfenbüttel on 2 November. The duke’s inability to administer his own territory would foreshadow a disastrous future for the duchy. During the Thirty Years’ War, Brunswick-Lüneburg was ravaged, with much territory and many lives lost to both Protestant and Catholic armies that swept through the region.
