RUSSIA, Tsars of Russia. Sofya Alexeyevna. Regent, 1682-1689. AV 2/3 Chervonetz (2.19 g, 12h). Novodel issue. “Tsar and Grand Duke Ivan Alexeievich, Pyotr Alexeievich” in Cyrillic, crowned and mantled bust of Ivan V facing slightly right and crowned and mantled bust of Pyotr I facing slightly left; double-headed imperial eagle facing with wings displayed, holding scepter and orb in field between busts / “And ruling women, rightly-believed Tsarina and Grand Duchess Sofya Alexeievna of all Great, Small, and White Russia, sole ruler” in Cyrillic, crowned and mantled bust of Sofya Alexeyevna facing slightly left, holding scepter in right hand. Cf. Kaim 1859; Friedberg 59; KM -. EF, scuff marks along edge from mount previously removed. Apparently an unpublished novodel for this denomination.

Kaim lists no novodel for the 2/3 chervonetz (cf. Triton VIII, lot 1723). He does list a novodel for the 1/2 chervonetz (1860B plate coin), which appeared in Giessener Münzhandlung 14 (30 June 1979), lot 3001, and whose dies are the same as our specimen. As the plated examples of Kaim 1859 (2/3 chervonetz) and 1860A (1/2 chervonetz) were struck from the same dies, it is highly probable that the novodel dies for Kaim 1860B were used to strike a similar 2/3 chervonetz novodel.
