This undated medal was produced during the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685. The rebellion was an attempt by James Scott, Duke of Monmouth and the illegitimate son of King Charles II, to take the throne of England. Monmouth built a small force in the strongly Protestant area of South West England in the spring of 1685 and began his advance on Bristol. At the same time, the Royal Navy captured Monmouth’s ships, preventing his escape by sea. By July, Monmouth was defeated and executed. This medal was presented as an award for military service during the rebellion.
