Legio III, later named Gallica (”from Gaul”), was raised by Julius Caesar in 49 BC and fought subsequently in the civil wars of the late republic. After Actium, it was taken over by Octavian and went on to a long career under the empire, mainly stationed in Syria, where it was recorded until the mid-third century AD, after which its history becomes obscure.
