Redware pottery fragment of a plate with portraits. Roman North Africa, late 4th-5th centuries AD. (12 cm x 13 cm). The plate is squared in fine craftsmanship, with a central stamp of several men’s busts encircled. These figures are probably emperors. It has a high lip, with a refined linear border. To the top of the fragment, another stamped design. (Loss prevents us from determining much of what is going on, save for trees present.) The piece is footed, and stands a couple of millimeters high. On the bottom, an old collection mark “508”. Lovely and significant. Website shipping rates do not apply. |
