BITHYNIA, Heraclaea Pontica. temp. Gordian III. AD 238-244. Æ (36.5mm, 24.20 g, 1h). TON KIⳞTAN, bearded bust of Herakles right, lion’s skin tied around neck / [HPAKΛ]EΩTA[N ΠONTΩ], Herakles advancing right, head left, holding club and lion’s skin, commanding Cerberus on leash to left; to right; statue of Pomona(?) standing left, holding apple and grain ears; to left, tree. Unpublished but cf. RPC 2092 for same reverse type (probably the same reverse die) but different Herakles on the obverse. Earthen green patina, deposits, cleaning marks, pierced twice. Fine. Extremely rare. This obverse die is not published in RPC and unknown to Dalaison. |
