CARRIBEAN TERRITORIES, Guadeloupe. French. CU 3 Sous 9 Deniers – ¼ Escalin (28mm, 11.52 g, 6h). Struck 1793. RF in oval countermark on a 1767 French colonial Sol. For c/m: MCF 1; KM 1. For host: MCF 6 (Colonies générales). Even brown surfaces. C/m EF, host Good VF. An attractive specimen. Rare in this condition.
1.6 million copper Sol were struck in 1767 for circulation on the island of Guadelope. The inhabitants, however, had until that point been accustomed to using billon coinage, and the copper issue was a failure. The coins were withdrawn and placed in storage. A few decades later, under the First Republic, the supply of coinage to the island had deteriorated so much that the old Sols were pressed into circulation again. The old coppers were countermarked, overwriting the royal lis with the monogram of the republic.
