POTTERY. Greek Southern Italian Colonies. c. 4th-3rd Cent. BCE. (120 mm tall x 140 mm wide). An Apulian Lekanis, or footed covered bowl with two parts. The bottom has a bell shaped hollow foot, meeting a wide shallow bowl with a lip. The lid is equally shallow, with a fancy knob on the center of the piece. On the side of the lid, vertical lines create a border for a design of a lady of fashion flanked by either side with Rosettes. Opposite the rosettes, a goose with wings partially outstretched. Atop the knob, a central spoked or rayed design adorns the top. Lid partially restored from break on one side. A very pretty piece. |
