After the death of the Ikhshidid general Kafur, al-Mu‘izz launched an invasion of Egypt late in AH 357. In Sha‘ban of AH 358 he won a decisive battle which extinguished Ikhshidid power in the region, and Fatimid control of Egypt was secured. Al-Mu‘izz founded the great city of Cairo (al-Qahira, ‘The City of Victory’) shortly afterwards.
