THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION, Uncertain. 5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (6mm, 0.22 g). Wheel with four spokes / Quadripartite incuse square, with divisional lines offset. CNG E-546, lot 61; otherwise, unpublished in the standard references. Deeply toned, light roughness, off center on obverse. VF.
The style of the wheel on the obverse has some affinity with a similar group of Wappenmünzen hemiobols at Athens, the incuse of those issues are always diagonally divided. The offset division of the incuse here is unknown at Athens. Moreover, a handful of this type has appeared on the market recently, all with weights around 0.25, which does not fit the Attic standard. Fractional silver coins with varying incuses are known from the Thraco-Macedonian region, and though this reverse type is not yet attested, the weight does comport with forty-eighth staters in a number of the local standards used there in the fifth century BC.
