POTTERY. Magna Graecia. Gnathia. 6th-4th Cent. BCE. (180 mm tall x 75 mm wide). A finely made Epichysis in Gnathian style, with extensive painted designs atop a black field. Squat wide stylized foot with several tapers leads into long, tear shaped body that extends into a neck that splits, to one side, a long spout, to the other, a handle that extends high above the spout then falls to attach to the body. Glazework is polychrome, with several small registers of lines, half circles, meandros, swirls and dots, all surrounding a central double leaf vine design with dots suggesting sprouts along the vine. Patina present. There is a crack at the base of the handle on the inside only. This does not appear to have been repaired or reassembled. Really an impressive piece. |
