Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (25.5mm, 3.98 g, 6h). Uncertain mint. IMP CARAVSIVS P AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / MERCVR IO CON AVG, Mercury standing right, holding purse and long caduceus. Cf. RIC V 853 (for similar type). Dark brown patina, a couple spots of weakness. Near EF. Extremely rare and unpublished. Only one example of RIC V 853 in CoinArchives (Roma XIII, 1123 which hammered for 725 GBP). This coin with a different obverse legend, longer reverse legend, and most notably, with Mercury right instead of left. Likely the only known example and in excellent grade. |
