JUDAEA, Ascalon. Macrinus. AD 217-218. Æ (25.5mm, 13.38 g, 11h). Dated CY 321 (AD 217/8). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Derketo, wearing crescent headdress, holding dove and scepter, standing left on Triton, swimming left, who holds a trident in his raised hands; AKT (date) in legend. Rosenberger 203; Sofaer 183. Earthen brown patina, some roughness. Fine. Rare.

Derketo was a fertility goddess unique to the city of Ascalon. She was probably a local version of Atargatis, an already regionalized version of Aphrodite and Cybele.
