POTTERY. Magna Graecia. 6th-4th Cent. BCE. (140 mm wide x 155 mm tall). An Apulian olpe with a squat round foot that supports a oval body with a squat neck and flared lip. A single handle with a single Gordion Knot extends from the back of the lip to the shoulder of the pitcher. On the body, the head of a bejeweled Lady of fashion with extensive hairpiece. Wings extend from either side of her with curled tips. On the other side of the pitcher, a large rosette pattern is surrounded by vinelike designs surrounding. On the neck, a running vine pattern is topped by a row of vertical lines just under the lip. A couple tiny glaze surface chips on body, otherwise intact. A very impressive piece with wonderful glaze. |
