KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (30mm, 16.82 g, 12h). Kyzikos mint(?). Struck circa 297/6-282/1 BC or shortly after. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; AP monogram in inner left, ME monogram in exergue. Thompson –; Müller 434 (Ephesos); Meydancikkale 2717 var. (same obv. die; different monogram in exergue); Seyrig casts 198.6 (a specimen in the Hermitage). Lightly toned. VF.

The obverse die on this issue was apparently used extensively, and is linked to at least three separate reverse varieties that are differentiated by the monogram in the exergue. Over time, the obverse die became worn from use, and the details were re-engraved. A comparison of CNG E482, lot 65, and CNG 60 lots 462–5 show the evolution of the obverse die. The present coin appears to have been struck later in the life of the die, as nearly all the details had been re-engraved.
