Mint in East Anglia (Norwich?); Manticen, moneyer. + EΛDGΛR RE+, crowned and draped bust right / + NΛNTICEN mONETΛ, small cross pattée. CTCE 380; SCBI 34 (BM), 1179; North 750; SCBC 1138. Some light scratches. Toned. VF. A charming pre-reform local style portrait. Rare.

King Eadgar, the son of Edmund and his first wife Ælfgifu, from 957 ruled the lands north of the Thames, while his older brother Edwig (955-959) ruled the ancestral kingdom of Wessex. With Edwig’s death in 959, Eadgar reigned over a united kingdom of England.
