ARKADIA, Tegea. Circa 50-25 BC. Æ Hemiobol or Hexachalkon (22.5mm, 6.36 g, 12h). Head of Aleos right, wearing tainia / Kepheos standing right, holding spear and shield and extending hand to Athena standing left, holding spear and lock of Medusa’s hair; between them stands Sterope, holding vessel to receive lock; two monograms in field. BCD Peloponnesos 1749; HGC 5, 1056. Dark green patina, some roughness. VF.

Ex Christopher Morcom Collection (Classical Numismatic Group 76, 12 September 2007), lot 606.

Aleos was the mythical founder of Alea and the king of Tegea. Athena presented a lock of Medusa’s hair to Aleos so that Tegea, the home of a major sanctuary of Athena, would be rendered unconquerable.
