Q. Cassius Longinus. 55 BC. AR Denarius (18.5mm, 4.08 g, 6h). Rome mint. Veiled head of Vesta right / Curule chair within Temple of Vesta; urn to left, voting tablet inscribed AC (Absolvo Condemno) to right. Crawford 428/1; Sydenham 917; Cassia 9; RBW 1533. Old cabinet toning with iridescence, minor porosity and scratches under tone. Good VF.

From the 1930’s Collection of Robert W. Hubel of Michigan, purchased from Spink, February 1930.

The reverse scene depicts the Temple of Vesta, where the Vestal Virgins maintained the Immortal Flame and attended to the duties of the worship of the goddess. Three of the virgins: Emilia, Marcia, and Licinia lost their virtue in one evening and were deemed unfit to serve. Emelia was immediately sentenced but the others were voted by the people and found guilty; they were sentenced to be buried alive by the new preator, Cassius Longinus. The A C on the tablet are abbreviations for absolvo and condemno.
