Michael II the Amorian, with Theophilus. 820-829. AV Solidus (10.5mm, 3.67 g, 6h). Syracuse mint. Crowned facing bust of Michael, wearing chlamys, holding globus cruciger / Crowned facing bust of Theophilus, wearing chlamys, holding globus cruciger. Cf. DOC 16 (for type as a semissis); cf. Anastasi 506-7 (same); cf. SB 1647 (same). Toned. Near VF. A curious coin with the weight of a solidus but with the iconography of a semissis. Given the compact nature of the Syracuse flans, it is most likely that this coin was accidentally struck with semissis dies rather than constituting a new type. |
