SCOTLAND. William I 'the Lion'. 1165-1214. AR Penny (18mm, 1.43 g, 10h). Short Cross and Stars coinage, phase B. Perth(?) mint; Henri le Rus, moneyer. Struck circa 1205-1230. + LЄ RIIR Wm, crowned head left; scepter to left / + hЄNRI LЄ RVS, voided short cross; stars in quarters (4 stars of 5 points). Jones & Sugden dies M/20 and pl. 34 (this coin cited and illustrated); cf. Burns 32b (fig. 51B); cf. SCBI 35 (Ashmolean & Hunterian), 77-8 (for type); SCBC 5031. Toned, tight flan. Near VF. Rare.

From the Raymond Collection; Ian Jones Collection; T.A. Bearman Collection (purchased en bloc by Baldwin’s, 1922), purchased from the Lords of the Treasury, 26 January 1903; 1902 Colchester Hoard (not in Sotheby’s sale).

Most of the 1902 Colchester Hoard was sold by Sotheby’s in June 1903 and Glendining in September 1907. Bearman’s ticket seems to indicate that he purchased it directly from the Lords of the Treasury in January 1903.

Closing Date and Time: 26 September 2024 at 12:42:00 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
