SCOTLAND. Alexander II. 1214-1249. AR Penny (28mm, 1.35 g, 10h). Short Cross and Stars coinage, phase B. Edinburgh or Perth mint; Hue and Walter, moneyers. Struck in the name of William I, circa 1214-1230. · WILLELmV[...]R, crowned head left; scepter to left / + VVAV · TЄRЄh, voided short cross; stars in quarters (4 stars of 6 points). Jones & Sugden, Posthumous dies 4/F and pl. 5 (this coin illustrated); Burns –; SCBI 35 (Ashmolean & Hunterian), –; SCBC 5029 (William I). Richly toned. VF.

From the Raymond Collection; Ian Jones Collection.

SCBC follows Stewartby’s chronology, which divides the Short Cross and Stars coinage into three phases. Phase A, bearing the mint name in addition to the moneyer’s, was struck solely under William himself. Phase B, lacking the mint name, dates from circa 1214-1230 and was struck into the reign of his successor, Alexander II. Phase C was struck solely at Roxburgh and, while still in the name of William, was issued under Alexander II, after circa 1230.

Sugden & Jones break down the sizable Phase B coinage further, identifying a group of dies that can be determined to be posthumous issues of William.
