SCOTLAND. Robert III. 1390-1406. AR Penny (18mm, 0.82 g, 8h). Second issue. Aberdeen(?) mint. Crowned facing bust. Saltire and pellet stops / Long cross pattée; triple pellets in quarters. Burns p. 325; cf. SCBI 35 (Ashmolean & Hunterian), 608; SCBC 5182. Toned, ragged flan, some ghosting. Fine. Very rare variety without mint name.

From the Raymond Collection. Ex Joan L. Murray Collection (Baldwin’s 26, 9 May 2001), lot 1890, acquired from Stewart, 24 November 1976.

An identical bust appears on pennies of James I naming the Aberdeen mint.

Joan L. Murray worked as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park during the Second World War, where she was close friends with Alan Turing. Shortly after the war, she met her husband, John K.R. Murray, and developed an interest in numismatics. Both Murrays would make significant contributions to the study of Scottish coinange.
