Radiate head left / Victory flying left, holding wreath and palm frond; II (mark of value) in exergue. RIC I 199; WCN 196; D. Calomino, Defacing the Past Figure 36 (this coin). Ex Nomos 22 (22 June 2021), lot 291; Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 336 (8 October 2014), lot 254 (hammer $1,100).

This Nero dupondius was tooled and altered in antiquity with the name of Nero erased and the portrait re-engraved to more closely resemble either Vitellius or Vespasian. A very interesting piece and a form of damnatio memoriae.
