Valens. AD 364-378. AV Solidus (21mm, 4.45 g, 12h). Antioch mint, 8th officina. Struck circa AD 372. Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Roma seated facing, holding scepter, and Constantinopolis seated left, holding scepter and resting foot on prow, supporting between them a shield inscribed VOT/ X/ MVL/ XX in four lines; cross above; ANOBH. Cf. RIC IX 16c (for similar issue); Depeyrot 38/4 var. (simple cross instead of Christogram on obv.); Goldberg 5 (6 April 2000), lot 3693 var. (officina). Toned, scratches and marks. VF. Seemingly unlisted in the references with the simple cross above Roma and Constantinopolis instead of a Christogram. Extremely rare thus. Lot includes a David Sear certificate of authenticity.
