POTTERY. Magna Graecia. 6th-4th Cent. BCE. (85 mm wide x 110 mm tall). An Apulian lekanis with a round foot and thin stem that supports a round body. A round lid rests on the base at the midpoint of the body, a top rests a tall, knobbed handle. The piece is extensively decorated, the bottom portion presents a wave pattern surrounding the piece. A concentric circle borders the design. On the lid, a pair of heads of Ladies of Fashion face left. Between them, rosettes. Some loss of glaze and encrustations present. The lid has a small part of the lip missing. The lid does not precisely fit the base, suggesting that these pieces were mated together later. |
