Fatimids. al-'Aziz billah. AH 365-386 / AD 975-996. AV Dinar (22.5mm, 4.14 g). Al-Qahira al-Mahrusa mint. Dated AH 383 (AD 993/4). Nicol 696; Album 703. Near VF, slightly creased. Extremely rare, only two examples recorded by Nicol.

The great city of Cairo was founded by the Fatimid ruler al-Mu‘izz, al-‘Aziz’s predecessor, following the Fatimid conquest of Egypt in AH 358. Al-Mu‘izz made it his capital in AH 363. Fatimid dinars struck in Egypt normally feature the provincial mint-name Misr, but a few very rare examples dated AH 383 and 394 have the city name, al-Qahira al-Mahrusa. It has been suggested that these mint-names commemorate the construction of Cairo’s city walls, originally constructed in a roughly rectangular plan with eight gates.
