Maximianus. First reign, AD 286-305. Antoninianus (20.5mm, 3.13 g, 6h). ‘C’ mint. Struck under Carausius, circa AD 286-circa 293. IMP C MAXIMIANVS AVG, radiate and trabeate bust left, holding eagle-tipped scepter / PAX A VGGG, Pax standing left, holding olive branch and vertical scepter; S|P//C. RIC V –; Bourne 94 corr. (obv. legend; this coin cited); Malcolm Lyne, “Some New Coin Types of Carausius and Allectus and the History of the British Provinces: AD 286-296” in NC 2003, p. 164 and pl. 27, 28 (this coin). Dark brown-green patina, deposits. VF. Extremely rare and possibly unique. The bust clearly intended as a trabea but with cuirass features. A known and common mix-up at the London mint on issues from Carausius to those struck under Constantine I.
