Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (19mm, 3.81 g, 6h). Uncertain mint. IMP C M CARAVSIVS P F AVG, radiate and draped bust right / MONIT [...] [sic], Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopia; O[...]. Cf. RIC V 292 (for similar issue at the ‘C’ mint) and 867 (for rev. legend at the uncertain mint); cf. CHRB III, 20305 (possibly this coin). Dark brown patina. VF.

From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection, purchased from Spink, 15 October 2003.

A perplexing coin to classify in the references. RIC V 292 and 867 are the only examples that records the legend error with the E in MONETA cut as an I. RIC V 292 has the same features as this coin save that it belongs to the ‘C’ mint. RIC V 867 belongs to uncertain mint, but features a different obverse legend and bust type and is synonymous with CHRB 20305A which makes an obverse legend correction. CHRB 20305 in the Blackmoor hoard of 1873 has identical specifications and type to the present coin being offered here but makes no mention of the reverse legend error in the cataloging. However, given that 20305A does note the error, it is possibly that this is simply a minor text error in CHRB and that the present coin did indeed belong to the the Blackmoor hoard. However, since the coin is not illustrated in Bland’s 1982 catalog, this is regrettably impossible to verify.
