Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (21.5mm, 3.55 g, 6h). Londinium (London) mint. IMP CARAVSIVS P F AV, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / [P]AX CA R A VSI AVG, Pax standing left, holding olive branch and transverse scepter; F|O//[ML]. RIC V 146 (cites Willoughby Gardner); W. Gardner, “A Find of Coins of Carausius from the Little Orme’s Head” in NC 1956, p. 212, 68. Dark green patina, light cleaning scratches. VF. Extremely rare. Possibly the 1907 Little Orme’s Head coin. Matching in detail exactly except that the bust type is given as radiate and draped only. Potentially done in error. Though without plates and dimensions it is regrettably impossible to verify at this time. |
