Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (23mm, 4.18 g, 8h). ‘C’ mint. IMP C CARAVSIVS PIVS AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / SPE S AVGGG, Seps walking left, holding flower and raising hem of skirt; S|P//C. RIC V –; Bourne –; A. Morris, “The Enigma of the ‘C’ Mint” in NumCirc XCIV.5 (June 1986), p. 149 (this coin published). Dark green-brown patina, minor cleaning scratches. Good VF. Extremely rare and possibly unique. Incredibly unusual with PIVS spelled out in the obverse legend. Cf. CNG 574, 576 (for another example with PIVS spelled out). Spes is additionally a very uncommon reverse type for the issues citing Diocletian and Maximianus.

From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection, purchased from Spink, 30 May 2001.

Morris’ conclusion in his article for the 1986 NumCirc is very flawed. There are a number of reasons why the ‘C’ mint cannot be Gesoriacum’ and is concurrently highly unlikely to stand for ‘Gallia.’
