CARTHAGE, Third Punic War. Circa 149-146 BC. Serrate BI Double Shekel (25mm, 12.70 g, 12h). Wreathed head of Tanit left / Horse standing right, pellet-in-crescent below raised left leg (obscured by die break). Visonà, Serrated, variety PC2, 111 corr. (O1/R45 – this coin); CNP 62e; MAA 100d; SNG Copenhagen 404. Toned, roughness, cleaning marks. VF.

From the Henry A. Sauter Collection. Ex Superior (10 February 1975), lot 2041; Sotheby’s (16 February 1972), lot 325; Coins & Antiquities FPL 1 (1970), no. G498.

From the last issue of Carthage before its destruction by a vengeful Rome following the Third Punic War (149-146 BC). The serrate edge is found on both electrum and billon coins of the period and is similar to the flan treatments of contemporary Macedonian and Seleukid bronze coins. The reason for this added detail remains a mystery.
