IONIA, Ephesus. 2nd-3rd centuries AD. PB Tessera (18mm, 2.79 g, 5h). Lions tanding right / Cult statue of Artemis Ephesia. Cf. Gülbay & Kireç 173 (for rev.). Tan patina. VF.
From the Dalzell Collection.
One curious aspect of the lead tokens of Ephesus is the appearance of types and dies either alone, with a blank reverse type, or paired with another type. The bifacial specimens often appear to have both sides struck at the same time. No satisfactory explanation has been made for this phenomenon, but it likely indicates that the authority for the issue was shared between two individuals. For discussion, see Dalzell, “Personal, Public and Mercantile Themes on Unpublished Lead Tokens,” in Tokens, Value and Identity: Exploring Monetiform Objects in Antiquity and the Middle Ages (2021), p. 85.
