ETRURIA, Populonia. 3rd century BC. AR 20 Asses (19.5mm, 8.34 g). Diademed facing head of Metus; X X (mark of value) below / Blank. EC Group XII, Series 52, 1254 (O20 – this coin); HN Italy 142. Toned, die break on obverse (diagnostic for die), struck with clashed reverse die (of uncertain type). VF.

Ex Classical Numismatic Group 45 (18 March 1998), lot 15.

The reverse die used on this piece is rather intriguing. Typically, the reverse die on these is blank, but upon close inspection, it is clear that the die used here has an incuse type within a circular border. As it is too late for it to be an incuse type, it must be from a clashed die. However, the type is definitely not that of the obverse here, or any other issue at Populonia. Unfortunately, it appears that the mint attempted to flatten the die by hammering, so that only a small portion remains.
