KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AV Stater (17.5mm, 8.54 g, 12h). Uncertain mint. Posthumous issue, struck late 4th-3rd centuries BC. Helmeted head of Athena right, coiled serpent on helmet / AΛEΞANΔPOY, Nike standing left, holding wreath in extended right hand and cradling stylis in left arm; to outer right, Σ above ZΩ monogram. Unpublished. Scattered marks and scratches. Good VF. Extremely rare.

This unpublished stater has markings with no parallel in silver or bronze. Although both control marks were used independent of one another at various mints and issues, in all metals, all are sufficiently dissimilar to prevent an attribution to a particular mint or region at this time. The style and characteristics of the flan, though, permit a reasonable dating to the late 4th through 3rd centuries BC.

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
