KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28.5mm, 17.12 g, 1h). Uncertain mint. Struck late 4th-3rd centuries BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; no control marks. Unpublished. Lightly toned, double struck, some scratches and scuffs. VF. Very rare.

From the Ulysses Collection.

There are many unmarked issues of Alexander tetradrachms, which Price attributed to a variety of mints based on find data or style. The style of the present coin bears no resemblance to those issues, so can not be attributed to a particular mint or region. The style and characteristics of the flan, though, permit a reasonable dating to the late 4th through 3rd centuries BC.
