ATTICA, Athens. Circa 140-90 BC. Æ (9mm, 1.51 g, 11h). Struck for circulation on Delos. Head of Artemis right; quiver at shoulder / Plemochoe within wreath. Kroll 104; Svoronos pl. 106, 76-81 (Athenian Cleruchs on Delos); HGC 4, 1746. Brown patina. Near VF. Very rare.
Ex Richard Cyril Lockett Collection (Greek Part III, 27 May 1959), lot 2108 (part of; his ticket included).
Svoronos attributed many small Æ to the Cleruchs on Delos but excavations at the Agora have disproved most of his attributions. As Kroll states, "One of the exceptions is Artemis/Plemochoe Æ 4 (104), which, although probably minted at Athens, seems to have been consigned for circulation on Delos."
Closing Date and Time: 18 May 2022 at 11:05:20 ET.
All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
