POTTERY. Magna Graecia. 6th-4th Cent. BCE. (165 mm tall x 300 mm wide). An Apulian Skyphos with tall walls on the cup and two handles that are positioned just under the lip opposite of each other. The skyphos presents a Lady in Fashion in a flowing underdress with her hair up in a bun and adorning a necklace. Her left arm rests against a post, in her right hand is a strigil, which she holds up in preparation for use. On the opposite side of the cup, a nude attendant faces left, waiting to assist the lady in her bathing before a tall basin. In between both motifs on either side, a modified vine pattern intertwines between two rosettes under each handle. Some fading of the base glaze to a reddish hue. Otherwise, a finely painted skyphos. Restored from fragments. |
