Northern France, Paris. Circa AD 1410. Leaf (5.24”x6.10”). Medieval Book of Hours. Illuminated leaf mostly containing hymns and prayers to Mary. Commencing with the end of Psalm 132: 3 in the Vulgate followed by a prayer. The majority of the leaf containing the Offertory for the Feast of the Visitation: Beata Es, Virgo Maria followed by the first five stanzas of the Marian hymn Ave Maris Stella. From a prayer book worthy of someone of some means for the time. Gold, red, blue, and white illumination. Bold ink. Minor browning, tiny tears, and adhesive residue at edge, old code penciled in at lower margin. Good VF. |
