Constantine I. AD 307/310-337. Æ Follis (22mm, 4.92 g, 6h). Londinium (London) mint. Struck circa AD 311-312. CONSTANT INVS AVG, laureate and cuirassed bust left, holding eagle-tipped scepter / Sol standing left, holding globe and whip; –|*//PLN. RIC VI 182 var. (bust type); RML 350 var. (forthcoming; same) and 362 var. (obv. legend); C&T 7.03.047 var. (bust type) and 7.03.57 var. (obv. legend). Dark brown patina, slight weakness and roughness. Good VF.

From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection, purchased Galata, June 1988.

An interesting issue that does not perfectly fit within either C&T or RML. While the cuirassed and trabeate busts are often confused, this example has clear pteruges which makes it a cuirassed bust even though it could certainly be considered quasi-consular. RML and C&T have both bust types (trabeate and cuirassed) recorded for this issue holding the eagle-tipped scepter, but not with the cuirassed bust paired with this obverse legend. In both cases, the cuirassed bust is paired with the obverse legend CONSTANTINVS AG. Consequently, this coin should likely receive its own catalog entry in future iterations of the references as a laureate and cuirassed bust left, holding eagle-tipped scepter paired with the obverse legend CONSTANTINVS AVG.
