EL SALVADOR, Republic. 1841-pres. AR Real (19mm, 2.48 g). Type VI. Struck 1869. Coat-of-arms over crossed flags and palm fronds within circular countermark on a Spanish American Cob Real. KM 46. Toned. Host Fair, c/m: Near VF.

From the Alexander Christopher Collection.

By the 1860s, El Salvador had been flooded with a variety of Latin American and European coins, mostly worn and, in the case of certain Spanish issues, struck in debased silver. To address this problem, the government began to countermark these coins to approve them for circulation. This particular stamp was authorized on 7 April 1869, to be applied on Latin American cob coinage.

Closing Date and Time: 19 June 2024 at 14:18:20 ET.
