POTTERY. Magna Graecia. 6th-4th Cent. BCE. (265 mm tall x 145 mm wide). A Gnathian Oinochoe with extensive painting on the body and neck of the piece. A flat, round foot supports a tapered ribbed body that extends upwards to taper into a narrowing long neck that supports a wide trefoil style spout. A single handle extends from the back of the trefoil as a single coil stretching down to the base of the neck. It is decorated at the spout with a molded element now worn and damaged beyond recognition. The painted decoration on the piece is present under the spout of the vessel on the neck opposite the handle and again as a polychromatic wavy design midsection of the body between ribbed sections. The larger design shows the the head of a Lady of Fashion facing left with her hair in a bun and wearing a diadem. She is present under a draped cloth that seemingly hangs from a pattern of grape vines that surround the neck of the pitcher. To either side, more vine patterns frame the design. Loss is present on the painting in places, at points significantly. A large chip from the trefoil of the spout is separated but included. This broken piece can be easily restored.

From the Sand Collection.
