ISLANDS off CARIA, Kos. Late 3rd-early 2nd centuries BC. AR Tetradrachm (30.5mm, 16.15 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, monogram above vertical club. Unpublished. Toned, porous, slight bend at edge, test cut on obverse, minor scrape at edge on reverse. VF. Apparently unique.

From the Richard Ashton Collection. Ex Bucephalus 4 (11 March 2022), lot 81.

The attribution to Kos is tentative. The later issue of the city have a monogram and club, but the club is always above a crab, the mint mark of Kos. However, the style of both the obverse and reverse are extremely close to that at Kos, while being significantly different from other issues bearing a club symbol.
