Lead Shield Weight. Possilby an Italian wool merchants weight. 13th-14th Century. Crowned Lys Type. VF, with original patina, small spade mark across crown from excavation.

From the inventory of Haber Artworks, NYC. Annotated on the back indicating it was found on Hobb Moor, Dringhouses, in York in 1920.

Probably used in Malton in trade with Malton Priory. A Florentine Merchant in his almanac, La Pratica Della Mercatura, compiled circa 1290-1234, discusses trade with the monastery. A recent exhibition of these lead shield weights was held at the Malton Museum, North Yorkshire, in 2022. This piece is comparable to inv MM2006.716.
