PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II (Physcon). 145-116 BC. AR Tetradrachm (23mm, 13.45 g, 12h). Salamis mint. Dated RY 39 (132/1 BC). Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, wearing aegis / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; transverse scepter in background, LΛ[Θ] (date) to left, ΣA to right. Svoronos 1552 var. (no star; same obv. die as 1552β); Olivier 598–603 var. (no star; obv. die D132); SNG Copenhagen –; DCA 52. Roughness, cleaning marks, flan flaw on obverse (filled with copper deposit). Good VF. Extremely rare with star, unpublished in the standard references.

It is uncertain what happened to the final digit in the date. There are traces of the Θ visible, so the error appears to have occurred in the die. Since the star symbol is known on the issues of year 40, it is possible that the die was originally a year 39 die that was to be modified for the new year, but this was not done correctly; the star was added, but the date was not properly re-engraved.
