Philip I. AD 244-249. AR Antoninianus (22mm, 4.79 g, 12h). Antioch mint. 1st series, 2nd issue, AD 247-248. Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VIRTVS EXERCITVS, Virtus standing right, holding spear and shield set on ground to right. RIC IV 71; Bland Study 6; RSC 244. Toned, a few small deposits on obverse. Good VF.

This coin features an unusual obverse legend ending in P M, short for Persicus or Parthicus Maximus, which Philip claimed after ending the disastrous war in which his predecessor, Gordian III, died. It seems that Philip was found undeserving of such a title, and it very quickly disappeared from his coinage.
