PORTUGAL, Kingdom. Luís I o Popular (the Popular). 1861-1889. AR 1200 Réis (43mm, 26.70 g). Countermarked for circulation in the Azores. Authorized 14 June 1871. Crown countermarked on the obverse of a Brazilian 960 Réis dated 1811 B. Cf. Gomes 11.00-11.03 (for other undertypes); cf. KM 21.1 (for other undertype). Host AU, c/m: Good VF. Host overstruck on a Spanish-American 8 Reales. Extremely rare host not recorded in Gomes or KM.

From the Alexander Christopher Collection.

The crown countermark of this type was intended to be applied to Brazilian 1200 Réis and related fractions. It would not be until 1887 that other foreign coinage was ordered to be countermarked with a crown and GP (Governo Portugues). Nevertheless, a few other issues are known with this stamp, including Indian rupees and Maria Theresa talers.
