POTTERY. Magna Graecia. 6th-4th Cent. BCE. (80 mm wide x 235 mm tall). An Apulian Lekythos reconstructed from fragments. A flat foot supports a squat stem that extends into a long slightly tapered body that abruptly forms a shoulder. From that shoulder, a squat neck terminates in a slightly trumpeted lip. A single small handle extends from the neck to the shoulder. Over the piece, an extensive painting presents two seated woman of fashion facing right, tending reins of a sled behind two horses. A man behind the horses faces left, and seems to be assisting the women. Before the horses, an attendant sits facing left, holding the horses in place. On shoulder, several rosettes and dot patterns are present. Spout reattached. Some significant loss of glaze. A beautiful piece of Apulian art. |
