Laureate head right; L ς (date) before / Messalina, veiled, standing left, leaning on column, holding two children and grain ears. Köln 88; Dattari (Savio) 129; K&G 12.54; RPC I 5164; Emmett 74.6. Toned. VF. Well centered and struck.

The reverse type depicts Valeria Messalina, Claudius’ third wife, in the guise of Demeter. The two small figures in her right hand are identified as Britannicus and Claudia Octavia, her two children by Claudius.
