L. Scribonius Libo. 62 BC. AR Denarius (19mm, 3.88 g, 6h). Rome mint. Diademed head of Bonus Eventus right / Puteal Scribonianum (Scribonian wellhead), decorated with garland and two lyres; pileus(?) or anvil at base. Crawford 416/1c; Sydenham 928; Scribonia 8b; RBW 1502. Toned, spot of find patina, minor deposits, faint hairlines. Good VF. Rare.

Ex Naville 30 (2 April 2017), lot 444.

Ursula Kampmann suggested in the 2011 article that this reverse symbol, the rarest of the issue, represents a pileus rather than a poorly engraved anvil. While not universally accepted, there is some evidence to suggest this hypothesis could be a valid suggestion. Contemporary wellheads are sometimes depicted with a head of Vulcan wearing a pileus or with just the pileus itself. This would raise the number of symbols on this issue to four adding to the undisputed hammer, tongs, and anvil reverses.
